Recently in India, the world famous Japanese
cuisine is gradually becoming a hit among the young and the health conscious
foodies. It was limited to only 5-star hotels, but nowadays it is accessible by
mainstream Japanese restaurants. Trying different types of food have come into
vogue in India very recently. Younger generations are more perceptible to new
things than their parents. So there is more demand for these different types of
cuisines.
Usually in a Japanese
meal, all the dishes are served together in a single course. What we call a
meal is generally composed of rice, soup, gyoza (dumplings), and two or more
dishes which could be fish or meat and a vegetable or a bean dish. Chopsticks are
usually used to eat a Japanese meal. But Japanese cuisine doesn't end with
just Sushi and Ramen. Here's a list of dishes that Indians should try out at
any Japanese restaurant to get a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine-
Bento box
The Bento box is basically
a boxed meal. It is made up of rice, fish with pickled vegetable a selection of
eggs (boiled, fried, scrambled or omelette), vegetables (pickled or boiled),
meat (grilled or fried). The presentation of a dish is a big deal for the Japanese,
so part of the challenge of making a Bento box is to make it look so good that
you feel hungry on the spot. Calling Bent box the Indian 'Thali' won't be wrong.
Japanese Noodles
There are basically
three types of noodles which the Japanese use - Udon is thick wheat noodles,
they are chewy and soft; they are served both hot and cold. Ramen is made of
wheat, the noodles are much thinner and longer than udon and have a nice chewy
bite when cooked. This is usually served in a hot broth with a topping of raw
egg or tofu. Soba, these noodles are made from buckwheat flour and have a
corresponding strong, nutty flavor served cold with a topping of sliced green
onions and Wasabi.
Sukiyaki
Sukiyaki is one of the
most popular hot pot dishes in Japan. It consists of thinly sliced beef, tofu
and onions and a sweet soup of soy sauce, sugar, and mirin. Some restaurants
may add greens and udon which is thick wheat flour noodles.
Teppenyaki
Meat, seafood and
vegetables prepared on a large iron griddle (teppan) on a hot steel plate in
the center of the table around the diners. Order this for drama as well as
flavour!
Gyoza
Basically momos, but
with a thinner wrapping. Gyoza, which originated from China, became a very
popular dish in Japan. These dumplings are made of minced vegetables and ground
meat with a rich garlic flavour. Japanese gyoza are usually deep fried.
Tempura
Almost as famous as
sushi, and a popular element of Japan cuisine, Tempura is batter-coated,
deep-fried pieces of seafood, vegetables, mushrooms or meat. It is light and
crispy, and comes with a light sauce. Tempura is sometimes added to soups or
ordered with set meals.
Miso soup
Miso soup is a simple
flavourful broth of seaweed and fish shavings, with a dash of miso paste (soya
bean). Some restaurants add a topping of nori, mushroom and tofu to it.
Yakitori
Yakitori is basically Japanese barbequed
chicken. Chicken pieces grilled over skewers. It is a popular bar snack with
various cuts of chicken, including heart, liver and cartilage cooked on skewers
over a charcoal grill, and flavoured with a tangy sauce.
